Gas-Fridge discusses Propane Appliances for those living Off-Grid

Propane appliances are for off-grid living says Gas-FridgeMany dream of living off grid. No more connection to the big power companies. Control your energy use as you see fit. No more unexpected power outages. Being self-sufficient and green. Gas-Fridge discusses how switching to propane appliances can help to achieve this dream.

Cooking - while it is possible for folks to cook outside over a nice fire on occasion, the reality is that conditions aren’t always great. Like when you have wind, rain, hail or snow, or maybe the firewood didn’t get chopped. You had a nice meal planned to cook outside for your family… then out of nowhere a monsoon comes through, ruining those well thought out plans. If you had a propane stove installed in your house, you wouldn’t have even noticed! There are many different types cooking devices available today, and with many different price points. Why not upgrade to an indoor propane gas range today and not worry about the weather outside when you’re cooking a meal.

Refrigeration – keeping perishables cool is a major challenge for people living off grid. Not having that option means you can only purchase food for very short periods of time. Imagine if you were able to still live off grid, yet keep those yummy steaks cool until you were ready to cook them. Having a propane refrigerator would make off grid living much easier. Our refrigerators feature a battery operated interior light, glass shelves, front mounted controls, crisper trays and reversible doors. No electricity required!

Freezers – Nothing like wishing you would keep your precious meats frozen until you wanted to use them. Off grid living could mean no more meet until grocery day and then you could only buy what you could eat that day. There are many sizes and styles of freezers to choose from these days. Upright or horizontal. Our gas freezers have a single burner that powers a double cooling unit design mounted on the rear. This enables our freezers to produce freezing temperatures at a low gas consumption rate. No electricity required!

Propane appliances allow off grid living with some of the comforts and conveniences we are accustomed to. Gas-Fridge is the leader in off-grid appliances from propane to natural gas and solar in the Prescott area. Gas Refrigerator Connection Options from Gas-Fridge

A Propane Refrigerator uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from a stored container called a tank or a cylinder which is regulated with a pressure regulator mounted at the tank and then plumbed to the point of use. These three components (tank, regulator, & plumbing) are all that is needed to get a propane gas refrigerator up and running. There are a few options on how to connect a propane refrigerator based on where the refrigerator is located. Gas-Fridge, your national LP gas refrigerator sales and service company, brings you these common options and some tips and tricks.

Tank / Cylinder
A propane gas fridge will operate from any size tank or cylinder. The size or capacity only dictates the amount of time the gas fridge will operate before the tank needs to be re-filled.

Gas refrigerator will operate from any size tank says Gas-Fridge, one of the nation's largest suppliers of gas appliances
Small portable tank & regulator
A tank may be as small as 5 gallons which is typical for a barbecue and is considered a portable tank. Weighing only about 20 pounds when completely filled, the 5-gallon size are easily placed in the back of a pick-up truck or even on the back of a mule for transport. Portable tanks can range in size up to about 25 gallons and weigh about pounds when full. The smaller tanks are great for remote locations where the propane must be “hauled in”.  All of these portable tanks can be plumbed with a short flexible hose that is connected to the rigid pipe of the home.

These portable tanks should never be used indoors since the pressure ahead of the regulator is high pressure and a leak or venting of the tank can cause a high volume of gas to escape rapidly and be very dangerous around an open flame or any ignition source. Any tank larger than 100 pounds is not practical to transport on a regular basis. A larger permanent tank for an average home will generally range from 125 gallons up to 1000 gallons.

Gas-Fridge discusses the portable versus large capacity tanks for gas appliances.
250 Gallon permanent tank
The larger non-portable permanent tanks are typically set outside of the home. Local code requirements will specify minimum distances from structures and property lines. Access to the tank is required for the delivery vehicle although a hose reel on the propane delivery truck can accommodate from 50 to 200 feet of distance. These tanks are piped to the house with rigid pipe underground. The regulator is mounted on top of the tank under the protective cover. The tank will have a gauge showing percentage of capacity.  A rule of thumb for total capacity will be about 20% less than the listed capacity of the tank to allow for gas expansion in hot weather.

Regulators
The high-pressure propane gas is regulated to low pressure of 11 inches of water column via the regulator. Most high-quality regulators are adjustable and we recommend this type for propane refrigerators since it is critical for proper operation and lifespan of the unit. The pressure should be checked upon installation.

Gas-Fridge is your supplier for gas refrigerator parts.
Tank mounted regulator
Regulators are available in different sizes and are rated by the BTU output. The BTU rating is normally listed on the regulator body. Most homes will require a regulator of 400,000 BTU or more. When the BTU rating of each appliance is added together, this will be the minimum BTU required for the system. A gas heater can use as much as 150,000 BTU whereas the EZ Freeze Gas Refrigerator will only use 1750 when on high flame. If the BTU demand is too high for the regulator, it will freeze up and the refrigerator will shut off. After the ice inside of the regulator defrosts, the fridge will have to be relit. This scenario is usually present when a small regulator is used to supply heaters, a water heater, and range all at one time. The small regulators are typically used to supply only one appliance or a multiple of low BTU appliances at one time.

The automatic changeover regulator is designed to connect to 2 tanks at one time and automatically switch to the second tank when the first tank goes empty. At this point, a red flag indicates that the first tank is empty. The user can then remove this tank and get it filled without interrupting service to the appliances.

Plumbing
flex line for propane refrigerators
Flex line & valve
A typical house is plumbed with rigid pipe throughout. Each appliance should have a valve located at the stub out location and connected from the valve to the gas hook up with a flex line. Most gas refrigerators require a 3/8-inch gas flex line with a 3/8 female flare fitting at the end. We recommend a 4-foot-long coated gas flex line. The flare fitting does not require sealant since the flare is self-sealing.

The smaller portable tanks and regulators can use flexible rubber hoses for connections. This is recommended for outdoor use only on a temporary basis.

Beware of cheap nonadjustable regulators. The supply pressure of a gas refrigerator is critical, and the wrong pressure can cause poor performance or a shortened lifespan. Use only a high quality adjustable type regulator.

Always check your connections with a soapy water solution prior to operation. Check local building codes for restrictions. Consult a professional for installation.

Gas-Fridge talks about the advantages of a propane or natural gas refrigerator

Gas-Fridge is one of the nation's largest suppliers of gas appliances.
When it comes to common household appliances, we have many choices in today’s market.  Most of us chose an electric refrigerator because it is what we have always known, but maybe with ever increasing electric rates, it’s time to take a look at some other options. Even of you do not live off-grid, or in locations where power can be interrupted by weather events, Gas-Fridge would like to discuss with you another option like propane or natural gas refrigerators.

Gas refrigerators are an efficient way of cooling food when one is living off the grid. There are many advantages to propane or natural gas refrigerators:

There are no moving parts used to cool a gas refrigerator, this means that there are no parts to wear out, this adds to the reliability and length of service that you can have it making ice for your tea.
With the propane price at about $2.35 a gallon (maybe less where you live), a propane refrigerator will cost approx. $1.30 a day to operate. With this amount of propane gas usage, a person should be able to get 20 days of use with only a 20# propane cylinder. If you have natural gas supplied to the location, this cost is reduced considerably.

Both electric and 12VDC refrigerators run with Freon and an electric compressor/pump, these are all moving parts and as mentioned above, they can wear out. Electric inverters, generators, and the like to power the refrigerator can wear out and become unreliable.

With a gas refrigerator, when there is a natural disaster such as flooding or storms and the power system goes out, your refrigeration system still works. What better than having less stress knowing that during a disaster your food is safe until the event is over.

Unfortunately, most people think that using a gas refrigerator is only good for out of the way places. However, as we have shown you it may be a viable option for many households, especially if you prefer to be a bit more “prepared” in case of an emergency or want something that will last 50+ years! Want to explore the options a little more? Just contact Gas-Fridge today at 928-636-6674 or visit our website at http://www.gas-fridge.com to find out about all your propane appliance options.

Gas Refrigerators are a great option for almost any home - Gas Fridge explains why

Whether you are from the snowy mountains of the Yukon or the deserts of Arizona, or a place
with expensive electricity costs, refrigeration is a necessary but potentially difficult (and costly)
task. You need to keep your food cold, but generators and solar panels can cost thousands of
Gas Refrigerators are a great option for almost any homedollars and are reliant on daylight and gasoline respectively. Don’t you wish there was a better
alternative? Well… There is one! Gas Fridge, one of the largest Gas Refrigerator distributors in
all of the United States, is here to tell you about how a Propane or LP gas fridge can help you in
your food refrigeration woes.

Gas Refrigerators are used by many full-time homeowners as well as those who own off-the-

grid properties, like hunting cabins or weekend getaways, or any other type of faraway place.
Plus, with electricity prices rising in some areas of the United States, it’s becoming more and
more convenient to use alternative energy sources like solar panels. That alone is a great
reason why a gas fridge could be perfect for someone who lives in the suburb as well as
someone who lives in the wilderness. By getting a refrigerator that runs on LP gas, you can
actually circumvent high power bills, as an average propane refrigerator costs less that 75 cents
per day to run. That's only $275 per year! Plus, no matter where you are, a propane refrigerator
can meet the needs of nearly any individual, regardless of where his or her home is located.

As for off-the- grid customers or those in a similar area where electricity can be hard to access,
gas refrigerators are a wonderful option for ease and cost. We have personally heard stories of
how the logistics of getting gas to a remote site makes for an interesting journey; one particular
story is how a man got tired of cutting and transporting large ice cubes from a glacier to an
icebox using an ATV. Imagine the difference this individual experience when this individual no
longer had to ride 25 miles out of his way to get “fuel” for his refrigerator. No matter who you are
or what your means are, transporting a propane container (or multiple) can be easy and more
affordable than an electric equivalent. Whether by car, boat, ATV or helicopter, propane is light,
clean burning, and efficient.

The amount of propane storage can greatly vary from 5 gallons to almost 500 gallons propane
storage for more permanent or year-round locations. The possibilities and options with propane
are endless. Plus, if you live in the wilderness to get away from all the noise of the city, you’ll be
happy to know that propane refrigerators are entirely silent -- with only the sound of a small
propane flame backing the powerful refrigerator. Compare the amount of sound a propane
refrigerator makes to that of a gas burner on a stove -- only audible from less than 5 feet away.
The final kicker is that if you are lucky enough to have a natural gas well on your property, you
can refrigerate for free. What a deal!

From the cost saving benefits, to the ease of transportation and use, and the many different
shapes, sizes, and styles that they come in, there isn’t really a reason to not get a gas
refrigerator. Call Gas Fridge today to learn more about how a gas refrigerator can help you with
your food refrigeration needs. We can be reach us at 928-636- 6674 or visit our website at

Gas Fridge explains why you should consider a gas refrigerator even if you don't live off-the-grid

When living where electricity is expensive or unavailable, a propane refrigerator is a great choice for keeping your food fresh and cold. It requires minimal upkeep and costs less to keep running well. Gas Fridge, a major online retailer of propane and LP gas refrigerators and freezers, would like to give you some reasons to consider a gas refrigerator for your off-the-grid home.

Gas Fridge explains why you should consider a gas refrigerator even if you don't live off-the-gridWith most area’s propane costs hitting right around $2 per gallon, a refrigerator will cost around $0.75 a day to run, with that price dropping even more in colder climates. With a standard #20 propane tank, you’re looking at around 20 days of use. That sure beats lugging around a huge cooler and ice pack, both in cooling performance and in ease of use. Plus, trucking in propane is a lot easier and cheaper than paying for a dedicated electrical line or using batteries.

The initial cost of purchasing a propane or LP gas fridge is quite a bit higher than an electric equivalent, but comparing the two isn’t exactly fair. An electric fridge runs on Freon and a compressor pump, whereas a propane fridge is powered using a heated gas mixture that circulates and cools. No electric lines power the fridge whatsoever. Comparing these two would be like comparing a solar power and wind power - they both meet the same ends, b
ut do it in completely different ways.

Most people may think that using a gas fridge is just for places that don't get electricity, but that isn't the case. Living in town doesn’t mean that a gas refrigerator doesn't still have its benefits. We still would argue that a gas fridge is more cost effective over the course of 20 years than a traditional electric fridge, simply because you’ll be hard pressed to find a fridge that will work flawlessly for 20 years for less than a propane fridge. Propane refrigerators use no moving parts, meaning that there is very little to actually wear out. No compressor unit to go bad, no batteries to change, etc. Plus, the electricity might end up costing more in the long run as well.

As you can tell, there are a lot of good reasons to use a propane powered refrigerator. They’re cheaper, last longer, and cool better. If it sounds like you could use a propane refrigerator or would like more information, you can call Gas Fridge at 928-636-6674 or visit our website at http://www.gas-fridge.com.

Gas Fridge explains some of the differences between older and modern gas refrigerators

Gas Fridge, your leading online retailer for off the LP gas refrigerators, is here to explain some of the changes that have been made from some of the first propane refrigerators. We’ve come a long way when it comes to gas cooling, and it will be very apparent after reading through this article. The most common type of old-school refrigerator was the SERVEL brand refrigerator, so all our comparisons will be made with that particular brand.

Efficiency - Old gas refrigerators used A LOT of propane - upwards of ¾ a gallon per day, whereas modern refrigerators use around a ¼ to ⅓ a gallon a day. This was due to the design of the absorption system not being as thermally efficient as it could be. Modern day systems are engineered to be incredibly efficient and can run for a long time while using minimal fuel. This change in fuel efficiency happened right around 1970, though improvements continue to happen over time.

Venting - The older SERVELs would have very large burners that were very inefficient with the way they burned their fuel. This would lead both to higher fuel usage and dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) buildup. Some of the worst offenders (pre 1950s) were measured to emit up to 1500 parts per million (PPM) of CO gas in very short amounts of time. In a 10 to 20-foot room, 300-400 PPM is considered dangerous and will begin to cause detrimental health effects. New fridges, however, are significantly more clean-burning due to their decreased fuel usage and increased airflow. Post 1980’s fridges, on average, will emit around 20-30 PPM, which is well below the recommended amount from appliances in a residential area. At this rate, no one should ever need to worry about CO poisoning with a modern-day propane refrigerator.

Legality - The inconvenience of having to vent an old SERVEL brand fridge could very well be enough of a reason alone to want to purchase a new EZ FREEZE refrigeration. And, if you live in Canada, it might not be a good idea to purchase a SERVEL that is pre- 1980, as it is completely illegal. In the United States, there is often a $100 disposal cost involved with these old machines too. While many people love these old fridges because they have lasted for 70+ years, they are a danger to yourself and others and should be dealt with by calling SERVAL action committee and 1-800-782-7431

If you have an old SERVEL brand gas fridge, it is time to think about getting a replacement. Modern fridges are more efficient, fast to cool your food, cheaper, lighter, and safer too. Understanding what an Absorption Refrigerator is, and why should choose Gas Fridge for your next EZ Freeze Refrigerator

Gas Fridge explains how absorption refigerators workWhat is an Absorption Refrigerator? It’s a lot simpler than you might expect. Gas Fridge is here to tell you all about Absorption Refrigerators and how to make an informed purchase when shopping for off the grid refrigerators.

What exactly is an Absorption Refrigerator? In an Absorption Refrigerator, the unit refrigerates itself by moving the hot air inside to the outside of the fridge. This process uses a sealed system containing a solution mixture of ammonia, water, sodium chromate, and hydrogen that is boiled by heat. The ammonia in the system is the main driving component, causing the change from liquid to gas, and back again. This pure ammonia liquid conducts heat away from the unity using aluminum plates on the back of the fridge. This system uses no moving parts at all and is accomplished using a combination of thermodynamics and the physical properties of gases.

The system is very specific in design, meaning a slight change in piping angle can lower performance and efficiency. A small solution ingredient difference will also change the gas refrigerator performance, as well as any weak welds will shorten the fridge’s life. Strict quality control is vital toward good production results. That’s why, at Gas Fridge ou

We rate the EZ Freeze quality control as the best in the industry. EZ Freeze is the only company that produces the entire product in-house, from start to finish. EZ Freeze spends over half their time in quality control checks to make sure their product is the best it can be. And, the EZ Freeze absorption units are interchangeable at any time with a new unit, meaning that repairs are easy and cheap. When we asked about why EZ Freeze has such strict quality control measures, we weren't surprised with the answer: "We realize that most of our fridges are used in remote areas. Hard to get to and from areas. It puts a great hardship on the consumer if there is a failure and we just don't want to see that happen."

As you can tell, we choose EZ Freeze for a reason. Their attention to quality is unmatchable and their products are easily repairable when something does go wrong. Defrosting your gas refrigerator - Helpful information from Gas Fridge

defrosting your gas fridge - tips and tricksWhat’s for dinner? A common question that leads many people looking into the freezer, chipping away at frozen shelves of food, and trying to find something before frostbite sets in causing them to abandon their quest. Gas Fridge would like to discuss with you about defrosting your natural gas or propane refrigerator.

All gas refrigerators are manual defrost, why?

Those who have owned a newer electric freezer know of their auto defrost feature. In order to accomplish this, the unit’s defrost cycle includes timers and heating elements, this puts a large load on the electric supply. For this reason, the manufacturers of propane gas refrigerators elect not to include this feature.

Frost build-up inside of a refrigerator compartment is inevitable and will eventually lower the efficiency of any refrigerator. You will need to defrost your gas fridge manually. Depending on a few factors your application and time will help to determine when and how often the off-grid refrigerator will need to be defrosted.

How do I know when it’s time to defrost my Gas Refrigerator?

A non-electric refrigerator has aluminum cooling fins located on the back wall of the refrigerator compartment. Humidity collects on these fins and turns to ice. Monitor these fins and when the frost builds up between these fins to the point where there is no air space between the fins it is time to defrost.

The humidity in the air, number of door openings, and moisture on groceries will all contribute to frost build up and will vary depending upon the owner and climate. We find that a defrosting schedule can be as often as every 3 months or as little as once a year even within the largest propane refrigerator. EZ Freeze has developed a defrosting method that takes all of the work out of defrosting. It is as simple as turning a dial. The EZ-Defrost System is available on all models.

How does the EZ-Defrost System work?

The EZ-Defrost System includes multiple parts. First is a pan under the cooling fins inside the fridge compartment with drip spout that directs the water to a funnel mounted on the back wall of the fridge interior. The water then funnels out through the back wall and down into a removable tray on the rear of the unit. The tray is designed to either be removed and emptied or left in place where the water will evaporate due to the heated tray holder.

This is as close to automatic as it gets. In order to defrost, all you need to do is turn the temperature thermostat dial to a minimum setting in the evening and in the morning the frost in the fridge will be defrosted and drained through the above process. At this point in time all you need to do is turn the thermostat dial back to where it was prior to defrosting. No need to empty the contents of the fridge. No need to turn off the unit. No need to use a hair dryer or hot water to defrost. This is why we call it the EZ-Defrost System.

Here at Gas-Fridge.com we have been using propane refrigerators for over 30 years. We have many time saving tips and tricks when it comes to operating and maintaining your gas fridge. A little about maintaining your gas fridge or gas freezer – Information from Gas-Fridge

Maintaining your gas fridge - brought to you by gas-fridge.comA gas fridge or freezer is a wonderful thing! For those people in remote locations without power, and areas prone to extended or unpredictable power outages, a gas fridge or freezer can be a life saver. Keeping food fresh or frozen makes life in remote locations easier and, during the winter months, the only real possible solution. Gas-Fridge brings you information on maintaining your gas fridge and freezer.

Because there are no moving parts in these gas refrigerators and gas freezers, there's not much maintenance needed. One very important thing you can do to keep the unit working to its maximum efficiency is to clean the flue periodically. The flue will soot up due to impurities in the gas. The dirtier the gas, the more soot will develop.

Getting started:

Cleaning the flue is simple. Turn the unit off and let the flue cool for a while. Place something over the burner orifice to protect it from the falling soot. Place a rag or piece of tin foil under the unit to catch any falling soot. Remove the baffles from the flue (if any). Be careful!! They may be hot. Use the Flue Brush and gently scrub the full length of the flue. Rotate the brush a few times to get all the soot possible.

One other common occurrence is debris in the burner air intake. If the gas fridge or gas freezer has been sitting for a while, spiders like the smell of propane and will make webs in the burner area and the unit will not light or burn with a dirty foul flame. Dirt, dust, pet hair, insects, lint, or anything migrating behind the gas fridge will increase the chances of the burning running foul.

Next step:

While in use, if the flame tip is yellow or orange, then chances are there is debris in the burner tube and air intake. It is very easy to remove. Turn the unit off. Using a piece of 1/4" flexible rubber hose, just aim it at the Air Intake of the Burner and blow through the other end to clean out the debris. Using compressed air or "air in a can" works well also. Be sure the unit is off and cooled before using "air in a can" since it can be highly flammable. Re-light the unit and visually check the flame. It should be a crisp blue flame with a white or yellow tip.

Continued maintenance:

Your refrigerator will give you years of trouble-free service if you do the following simple maintenance we mention above. To prevent debris from getting into the burner tube and creating most issues, it's a good idea to vacuum under and around your gas refrigerator or gas freezer often.
Checks every three to six months will help. Refer to the operator’s guide provided with your refrigerator for more details.

A more detailed description for servicing gas refrigerators is available on DVD along with many other troubleshooting and repair tips and tricks on our website. We hope you have found these tips helpful, if you have any questions or comments, please contact Gas-Fridge directly at 928-636-6674 or visit our website at http://www.gas-fridge.com.

Adjusting the Temperature of Propane Gas Refrigerators - Gas Fridge

The off grid refrigerator has a wide range of ambient temperatures. Gas Fridge can assist you with proper internal temperature settings.
Most propane gas refrigerators end up in remote locations. Off-grid owners have more of a vested interest in keeping the refrigerator operating efficiently. Propane is usually trucked to the location or hand carried. Most rural off grid homes, cabins, and cottages don’t have automatic climate control. The off grid refrigerator is subject to a wider range of ambient temperatures during the day and during the seasonal changes. Gas Fridge has a few sets of instructions for adjusting the thermometer to help you economize your power usage.

Gas refrigerators are all manually temperature controlled (no digital thermostats or electronics).

Using the Fridge for the weekend only:
•    Allow 12 hours of chill down time for your gas fridge, if empty at 70°-80° room temperature.
•    Keep the door closed as much as possible – it’s tempting to look inside; at least know what you need before opening the door. Temperatures inside the fridge won’t fluctuate as often and your fridge will run more efficiently.
•    Don’t load the fridge with any food or liquids that are not already cold or frozen.
•    Set the temperature setting to maximum. If possible, set the thermostat to maximum and replenish the ice trays or drinks at night right before bedtime.
•    Now that the fridge is chilled down, load the groceries in smaller amounts at timed intervals (10 lb / 2 hours). Recovery times increase by three times, if all loaded items are not cold or frozen.
•    If all your items are cold or frozen, it’s okay to load all of them at once.
•    Liquid is more dense and takes longer to chill. 4 individual quarts of liquid chill faster than a one gallon container with liquid.
•    If you’re having extra guests or a party at the cabin, rely on an ice chest for cold drinks – this reduces the traffic to the fridge, keeps the door closed, and helps to keep the perishable items cold.

Using the fridge full-time:

•    Allow 12 hours of chill down time for your gas fridge, if empty at 70°-80° room temperature.
•    Keep the door closed as much as possible – it’s tempting to look inside; at least know what you need before opening the door. Temperatures inside the fridge won’t fluctuate and your fridge will run more efficiently.
•    Load the groceries in smaller amounts at timed intervals (10 lb / 2 hours).
•    Keep track of the refrigerators interior temperatures – the setting will affect the refrigerator compartment temperatures. (There is no setting for the freezer.)
•    The thermostat for the home type refrigerators is located at the bottom of the cabinet on the outside front, near or behind the kick plate.
•    If possible install a remote digital thermometer. This allows you to monitor inside temperatures without opening the door and it also has an alarm in case the gas supply suddenly stops working.

Stabilizing the temperature:

•    Start at the maximum setting.
•    Take a true reading first thing in the morning before the door is opened.
•    When the reading reaches 32°, slightly move the dial toward the minimum setting, 1/12 of a turn.
•    Ideally the temperature should be 34° - 38°.

Seasonal Changes and humidity levels will have an affect on demand and will produce more frost on the cooling fins. Food mass or a full fridge will keep the temperature more stable compared to an empty fridge with more air mass. Cold air from a fairly empty fridge will simply fall to the floor. If you’re looking for more energy saving tips, or tips on how to set up your propane refrigerator, visit http://gas-fridge.com/ for more helpful articles, or call 928-636-6674 if you have additional questions.

Functions of a Propane Refrigerator - Information provided by Gas-Fridge

Absorption functions of a propane refrigerator by Gas-Fridge
Gas and propane refrigerators are available in different sizes, designs and features. These are the basics in how a gas refrigerator functions. The mixture in the cooling system of a propane refrigerator consists of anhydrous ammonia distilled water and hydrogen vapor.

The ammonia and water is heated by a propane flame. The water vaporizes into steam through the perk tube. This process is similar to a coffee percolator. The inner tube (perk tube) in the boiler emits steam and water bubbles moving upward. The ammonia is lighter that water and it will turn into steam sooner. The ammonia steam is pushed up into a condenser by the hydrogen pressure while the water falls down into the outer tube and is pushed into the absorber tubes which then returns to the mixing tank  known as the absorber tank.

While the ammonia steam moves upward through the rectifier and into the condenser tubes it becomes rich ammonia liquid. The rich ammonia liquid is pushed into the evaporator tubing. It is then pushed into the top of the evaporator tubing. After it is in the evaporator it meets the hydrogen gas moving up through the tube inside the evaporator. This hydrogen gas absorbs the rich ammonia. When the ammonia meets this hydrogen gas in the evaporator it creates a chemical reaction. This reaction evaporates the ammonia while making it extremely cold. This is what is known as heat absorbtion, removing the heat from the refrigerator box.

In the mean time, the water is pushed backwards to the absorber coils and drops downward to the absorber tank. While this is happening, the hydrogen gas passes upward through the absorber coils and catches any ammonia left in the weak water that is falling downward. Next, the hydrogen gas carries it up to the top of the evaporation system and drops it into the outer tube of the evaporator. It then flows downward in a mist causing it to become extremely cold. As it falls down, the rich ammonia returns to the absorber tank [mixing tank] and mixes with the weak water which allows it to continue with its cycle all over again.

An ammonia absorption cooling system is a unique design invented so that a person can operate independently, or live off the grid by using a propane, natural gas, or butane burner to heat the ammonia solution. If you are ready to invest in a durable propane refrigerator, then look no further. Gas Fridge is ready to answer your questions. Call 928-636-6674 or visit http://www.gas-fridge.com/.

Gas Freezers vs Solar Freezers - Gas Fridge

Gas Fridge sells DC Electric Freezers and Propane Gas Freezers.
There are two types of freezers, gas powered or DC powered. Which is more cost effective, a Propane Gas Freezer or a DC Electric Freezer? This all depends on the power source; DC, propane gas, or natural gas. Gas Fridge will sort out the differences here.

If solar energy, wind energy, or hydro energy is available, then the DC electric freezer operating cost will be low. However, the freezer must have power available at all times to keep the food storage at good freezing temperatures. When electrical sources become unavailable (the sun sets, or the wind stops blowing), freezers will require a battery bank for power storage. With hydro power, batteries may not be needed. Solar power however is not free. Solar power requires battery back-up and batteries wear out and must be replaced.

Gas Freezers can operate from stored LPG (Propane) gas or Natural Gas (a constant source of power). n some cases, a natural gas well is available on the property site and a natural gas freezer would be ideal. An un-metered well means free power to the natural gas freezer. Propane gas is also supplied either by truck to a permanent tank on the property or smaller portable tanks that can be transported and filled at a filling site.

Differences:

DC / Electric: Recovery time (time it takes for temperatures to come down or recover to the thermostat set temperature) when adding non-frozen foods – 2 hours
Retrieving a few frozen items: recovery time – a few minutes
It’s portable, if it’s operated with batteries or small solar cell.
Weight – 80 pounds lighter.

Gas / Absorption:
Recovery time – when adding non-frozen foods recovery time – 8 hours
Retrieving a few frozen items: recovery time – a few minutes
It’s portable, mainly because of the power source (propane) being stored in tanks.
Weight – 80 pounds heavier because of the absorption system

Chest Style:
The lid opening is at the top and cold air falls, so less cold air escapes.

Upright Style: These are open for less time since the goods are staring you in the face and are more accessible than the buried goods in the chest style. If the freezer is full of food then there is less air to fall out when the door is opened.

Gas Fridge is here to answer any questions or help select the freezer that is right for you. Call for more information at 928-636-6674, or visit our website to view the different products that we offer at http://gas-fridge.com/

Gas Fridge; Who Needs One? Basic Information from Gas Fridge

Propane refrigeraters and gas refrigerator repair are available at Gas Fridge.A gas powered refrigerator is a household, RV, or commercial refrigerator operating from a gas source in order to create cooling. Usually propane is used since it is portable and relatively easy to handle. Gas refrigerators are also powered by natural gas. Most RV units are manufactured as propane gas models and some have electric 110 and or 12 volt capability. Kerosene can be used, but it is not recommended. It’s not as popular and burns very dirty and requires constant maintenance of the burner to keep it clean. Gas Fridge has a few answers for anyone who is new to the idea of a propane, or gas refrigerator.

Most household style gas fridges do not have electric power options. The gas fridge is intended to be operated in a home without electrical service. Compared to electric units, the household propane powered refrigerator models are simpler in design and construction. This keeps the failure of parts to a minimum. There are no moving parts of a household gas refrigerator other than the operator adjustable thermostat. The cooling unit, or the absorption system, is a completely sealed system with heat and gravity acting as the motivators.

Some off grid appliance owners elect to use a gas refrigerator that has been salvaged from an RV motor home or RV trailer to use within the household. There a few disadvantages to this:

•    The RV units are much smaller in capacity and usually will not provide enough space to feed a family for more than 2 or 3 days.
•    Most of the RV units require 12 volt DC electric to keep the gas solenoids open during gas operation. Two power sources are needed for operation. Gas and electricity
•    The cooling units are designed for the life expectancy of an RV which is much shorter than that of a home's life expectancy.

Before you consider rebuilding a unit for an RV, we recommend a little research, such as an internet search, "rebuilt RV refrigerator cooling units" or, “RV gas Fridge,” before you make any decision. If you have more questions, we’re happy to answer them at 928-636-6674 or visit our website http://gas-fridge.com/

Did You Know that Gas Fridge Services and Repairs RV Refrigerators?

Gas Fridge is here to service, repair, or replace your RV gas fridge in Prescott Arizona.
A non-functioning refrigerator in a recreational vehicle can be problematic. When the refrigerator is down, the RV becomes useless by limiting the ability to travel away from civilization and be self reliant. There are many engine mechanics that can get you and your RV back on the road. There aren’t many RV Refrigerator Repairers that can properly repair your fridge and get you back to your way of life. Gas-Fridge can assist you with maintenance or repairs.

Until now, we haven’t advertised this service. We repair refrigerators for local folks as well as vacationers from out of town.  Many times the repair can be as simple as a fouled burner or as complicated as a leaking absorption cooling unit.

Most RV Refrigerators will fail early from the wear life of the unit and the wear life of the vehicle. The fridge might look brand new but will only need service or a repair. RVs travel a lot, leaving the fridge exposed to the elements, and it the will typically need more service than one that is static and in a home. The debris, dirt, road grime, and weather is hard on the burner and controls that are exposed to these elements.

An RV will go through periodic use, and since the fridge is turned on for short periods of time and then turned off for longer periods of time. Condensation develops as a result of this activity and will eventually corrode the cooling bars and cause a leak within the sealed absorption system. Boilers may crack from the constant heating and cooling of these metals. This is becoming more common with newer models. The electronic ignition will turn the flame on and off to control the internal temperatures of the refrigerator and freezer. Older models relied on a continuous flame that switched from high to low.

This would keep the boiler metals from flexing to a state where a crack would develop. We replace these absorption cooling units with either re-manufactured rebuilt cooling units or newly redesigned high performance cooling units.

For the larger model refrigerators, we can replace the cooling unit without removing the refrigerator from inside of the RV coach. Sometimes we replace the cooling when the customer removes a smaller refrigerator and drops it off. We also have the ability to ship the cooling unit directly to you so that you can do the replacement yourself. We have many options to accommodate you and your schedule.

Our maintenance service consists of cleaning the flue, burner, and orifice and is included in any repair or service we perform. This is an important service that most RV owners never perform and is the cause of the majority of the issues we find. We also replace control boards (if available), Igniters, and heat rods for those units that have failed electronics.

At Gas-Fridge, we can evaluate your RV refrigerator and give an estimate of repair and options for the specific problem. Visit us at http://gas-fridge.com/ for more information, and to find directions to our facility, or just give us a call at 928-636-6674.

Gas Fridge Explains Why You Need a Propane Refrigerator

See the experts at Gas-Fridge to learn why you need a propane refrigerator.
Gas-Fridge is the leader in propane refrigerators and your expert in knowing which unit best suits the purpose. Gas-Fridge will help you select a propane refrigerator that is perfect for remote cabins, vacation homes, hunting camps, or RV. They come in sizes ranging from 10 cubic feet up to 21 cubic feet.

Here are more reasons to own a gas fridge.

  • You live off the grid. You don't like the noise an electric refrigerator makes. You have considered the efficiency of a Gas Fridge. Your home is subject to natural disasters and power outages.
  • One of the most basic necessities in life is food. The need for food storage is practical, and how food is stored has an affect on your health and the length of your life. Cold food storage when done properly is important for healthy living. Consider all these reasons and you will see why a gas fridge is right for you.
  • All refrigerators must run from an energy source. One of the gas fridge advantages is how easy it is to store propane and unlike electricity, it can be transported. While most homeowners run the risk of losing electricity during a thunderstorm, the propane refrigerator will continue running, keeping your perishables fresh.
  • One power outage of more than two days can completely decimate your food supply in your electric fridge. With the cost of food within the fridge being upwards of $500.00, it pays to have a gas fridge as a back up unit.
  • The myth that a gas refrigerator does not cool as well as an electric is not true. Not only will they run colder than an electric unit, the absorption unit has far fewer parts than an electric compressor system. Fewer parts mean less chance of a failure. Other than the thermostat, here are virtually no moving parts within the propane gas refrigeration system.

If you have chosen to live off the grid, there is not much of an alternative. Many will find that purchasing ice for coolers will become inconvenient and not cost effective. DC refrigerator solar powered units are an alternative if the area has enough sun light per day and the solar system is large enough to handle the enormous load. “I found bad advice on the internet about Gas Refrigerators!” Gas-Fridge is here to help.

Gas-Fridge offers Propane refrigerators, accessories, installation and tips for off the grid refrigerators. The founders and employees of Dynamx, Inc. have all enjoyed the off-grid lifestyle for over 25 years. Gas-Fridge understands the systems and usage of the propane appliances they sell, and they understand propane appliances. They have also been using propane refrigerators for over 25 years. They believe in what we sell and our staff has been trained by the manufacturers.

Gas-Fridge offers technical support by phone, and carry in service for repairs on all brands.
Occasionally we discover an article from the internet such as this one posted by The Tiny House that may need clarification.  Gas Fridge would like to point out some misinformation here.

The author should seek advice from a qualified professional, instead of someone who is not an authority. The fridge is not designed for the purpose stated in the article. It should be able to function reasonably well in its current configuration.

Look for user error or installer error. Start by testing the gas pressure. This unit switches from high to low flame to control the rate of ammonia solution circulating through the system. When gas pressure is set too high, then the low flame circuit is not low enough. This causes too much solution circulation and creates freezing.

Propane refrigerators are sensitive to gas pressure. Use a secondary regulator. Be sure to have the correct pressure from the regulator. Most other gas appliances are not that sensitive to pressure. Set the pressure spot to 11 inches of water column for your propane refrigerator, or EZ Freeze brand.

If that tests okay, then the thermostat may have been calibrated too high and the unit is switching back to high flame too early and switching back too late. EZ Freeze uses this same thermostat within both the gas refrigerator units and gas freezer units. The difference is how they calibrate them for the temperature range. Calibration for this unit may have been set leaning to a colder setting from the factory.

This unit does not have the best thermo-insulation design between the fridge and freezer so leakage between the two spaces is a factor. This fridge was never intended for full time living in a home. It was made for an RV. RV’s are not built for efficiency; they are built for recreation or surviving away from home.

Propane Refrigerator Transporting and Storage - Gas Fridge

Congratulations! Either you bought a new home, or you just purchased a brand new propane refrigerator. Your baby, whether it's brand new, or you're re-locating, transporting the unit is not as complicated as you might believe. The gas refrigerator or gas freezer is not the same as your ordinary GE (General Electric). Before you strap your beloved fridge to the dolly, Gas-Fridge would like to go over a few facts. Moving a gas – or propane refrigerator is not as complicated as you may think. Here are few simple rules to follow.

See the experts at Gas-Fridge for propane refrigerators and off-grid living. The gas refrigerator or gas freezer is not built with the same components as an electric refrigerator. It's okay to tip, or lay the fridge on one side. Keeping it upright, no matter what, does not apply to the gas fridge. Transporting your propane refrigerator on its side has no long term affects to the operation, performance, or lifespan.  Laying the gas fridge on the back or even the front door is not out of the question but if you have a choice, however, we suggest the side to the left. Look to the left of the refrigerator, and lay it with the door's opening toward the floor.

Here's why:
1) With some brands, the solution within the sealed absorption system may get trapped in the wrong location. This limits or blocks the circulation of fluids during operation. A burping procedure must be used to free the “Lock” or “Blockage”. It's a simple process: Burping Your Propane Refrigerator. There are some exceptions, and for some brands, laying the left side down keeps the fluid where it needs to be. When standing the fridge back upright again, a “Lock” or Blockage” is less likely. The EZ Freeze brand is not susceptible to this type of “Lock” or “Blockage”.  2) The side of the fridge is a flat surface and will hold up better during transportation and is less prone to damage compared to the front or back. We suggest extra padding to avoid damage to the thin sheet metal cabinet.

Prolong the life of your gas refrigerator by following these simple steps:
It's okay to store a gas refrigerator while not in use with some basic care. Whether it's long term, or short term storage, a gas fridge stored while not in use will not have a short or long term affect. 1) Remove any moisture from the interior to prevent mold buildup. 2) Put some charcoal inside the refrigerator, or freezer to help absorb moisture, and avoid odor. An old newspaper will work, too. Leaving the door open may work, but for safety reasons is not recommended. Small children or animals may find their way inside.
Storing your propane fridge in freezing climates will not harm the unit. Remember to remove canned drinks. They will explode and will damage the interior – even with the door closed.

Keep insects away! S
pray an insect repellent around the burner box to deter insects such as spiders from nesting in the burner. An insect nest in the burner will cause performance issues and possibly a danger upon startup.
When it's time to put your gas fridge back to use, check your flame condition immediately after startup. The flame should be a bright blue at the base and have a clear tip with no yellow or white color. This clear tip is usually at the very top of the flame located up inside the flue exhaust. Use a mirror at the floor facing upwards to inspect it. If a yellow or white tip is present, maintenance is required.
Gas-Fridge would like to remind you to use caution, check your owners manual before moving your propane refrigerator, and avoid possible injury, or damage to the unit. Visit us online to see our selection of gas refrigerators at http://gas-fridge.com/ or call 928-636-6674

Gas Fridge Gives Some Insight on the Benefits of Owning a Modern Propane Refrigerator

A Little History and Comparisons about Propane Refrigerators from Gas Fridge

Propane gas refrigerators have changed since they first came onto the market. The newer models with ammonia cooling systems are lighter weight and there is a larger selection of models to choose from. Gas-Fridge provides all the information you need for deciding which propane refrigerator is right for you.

The SERVEL was built from the 1930s – 1950s, for durability and to last for generations. Today’s units are more streamline, lighter weight, yet dependable, and should last about 15 years.

Today you can find propane refrigerators with higher quality workmanship made with lighter materials, and weighing a total of 150-275 lbs. These are sold under the names DIAMOND, EZ-FREEZE, DOMETIC, CONSUL, and DANBY. The older units sold under the names SERVEL, ELECTROLUX, and eventually DOMETIC, weighed as much as 400-500 lbs.

The DIAMOND and EZ-FREEZE are made in the US, by separate manufacturers.
Modern propane refrigerators from Gas-Fridge are lighter weight, more durable, and burn cleaner.
The Pros of and older unit:

Materials used were made of galvanized components, which eliminated rust. The evaporator was galvanized too, which also eliminated rust, and caused no cooling leakage.

Many people loved the longevity and they have been in use for over 70 years.

Older SERVELs burn much dirtier than newer propane refrigerators. Modern units use only half the amount of fuel.

Older propane refrigerators emit CO gas to unhealthy levels, as much as 1500 parts per million.

Older SERVELs are illegal to operate in Canada, and our US government has actively set up a program to eliminate them from the market. An action Committee can be reached at 800-782-7431 for safe disposal. Ask about their $100.00 reward for removal of your old unit.

The pros of owning a new DIAMOND, EZ-FREEZE, DOMETIC, or CONSUL:

Propane refrigerators made since the 1980s, and currently are made to burn cleaner.

They emissions are only 20-30 PPM of Carbon Monoxide gas.

You should never worry about CO poisoning.

A new propane refrigerator usually does not need to be vented to the outside.

Gas Fridge would like to remind you that when incorporating your new Propane Refrigerator into your cabinets, be sure to allow proper ventilation with a vent in the floor towards the back. Also allow ventilation on the top of the refrigerator so that heat can escape the cooling system. Without adequate venting the unit could overheat.
