Gas Refrigerator Connection Options from Gas-Fridge

A Propane Refrigerator uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from a stored container called a tank or a cylinder which is regulated with a pressure regulator mounted at the tank and then plumbed to the point of use. These three components (tank, regulator, & plumbing) are all that is needed to get a propane gas refrigerator up and running. There are a few options on how to connect a propane refrigerator based on where the refrigerator is located. Gas-Fridge, your national LP gas refrigerator sales and service company, brings you these common options and some tips and tricks.

Tank / Cylinder
A propane gas fridge will operate from any size tank or cylinder. The size or capacity only dictates the amount of time the gas fridge will operate before the tank needs to be re-filled.

Small portable tank & regulator

A tank may be as small as 5 gallons which is typical for a barbecue and is considered a portable tank. Weighing only about 20 pounds when completely filled, the 5-gallon size are easily placed in the back of a pick-up truck or even on the back of a mule for transport. Portable tanks can range in size up to about 25 gallons and weigh about pounds when full. The smaller tanks are great for remote locations where the propane must be “hauled in”.  All of these portable tanks can be plumbed with a short flexible hose that is connected to the rigid pipe of the home.

These portable tanks should never be used indoors since the pressure ahead of the regulator is high pressure and a leak or venting of the tank can cause a high volume of gas to escape rapidly and be very dangerous around an open flame or any ignition source. Any tank larger than 100 pounds is not practical to transport on a regular basis. A larger permanent tank for an average home will generally range from 125 gallons up to 1000 gallons.

The larger non-portable permanent tanks are typically set outside of the home. Local code requirements will specify minimum distances from structures and property lines. Access to the tank is required for the delivery vehicle although a hose reel on the propane delivery truck can accommodate from 50 to 200 feet of distance. These tanks are piped to the house with rigid pipe underground. The regulator is mounted on top of the tank under the protective cover. The tank will have a gauge showing percentage of capacity.  A rule of thumb for total capacity will be about 20% less than the listed capacity of the tank to allow for gas expansion in hot weather.

Regulators
The high-pressure propane gas is regulated to low pressure of 11 inches of water column via the regulator. Most high-quality regulators are adjustable and we recommend this type for propane refrigerators since it is critical for proper operation and lifespan of the unit. The pressure should be checked upon installation.

Tank mounted regulator

Regulators are available in different sizes and are rated by the BTU output. The BTU rating is normally listed on the regulator body. Most homes will require a regulator of 400,000 BTU or more. When the BTU rating of each appliance is added together, this will be the minimum BTU required for the system. A gas heater can use as much as 150,000 BTU whereas the EZ Freeze Gas Refrigerator will only use 1750 when on high flame. If the BTU demand is too high for the regulator, it will freeze up and the refrigerator will shut off. After the ice inside of the regulator defrosts, the fridge will have to be relit. This scenario is usually present when a small regulator is used to supply heaters, a water heater, and range all at one time. The small regulators are typically used to supply only one appliance or a multiple of low BTU appliances at one time.

The automatic changeover regulator is designed to connect to 2 tanks at one time and automatically switch to the second tank when the first tank goes empty. At this point, a red flag indicates that the first tank is empty. The user can then remove this tank and get it filled without interrupting service to the appliances.

Plumbing

Flex line & valve

A typical house is plumbed with rigid pipe throughout. Each appliance should have a valve located at the stub out location and connected from the valve to the gas hook up with a flex line. Most gas refrigerators require a 3/8-inch gas flex line with a 3/8 female flare fitting at the end. We recommend a 4-foot-long coated gas flex line. The flare fitting does not require sealant since the flare is self-sealing.

The smaller portable tanks and regulators can use flexible rubber hoses for connections. This is recommended for outdoor use only on a temporary basis.

Beware of cheap nonadjustable regulators. The supply pressure of a gas refrigerator is critical, and the wrong pressure can cause poor performance or a shortened lifespan. Use only a high quality adjustable type regulator.

Most people may think that using a gas fridge is just for places that don't get electricity, but that isn't the case. Living in town doesn’t mean that a gas refrigerator doesn't still have its benefits. We still would argue that a gas fridge is more cost effective over the course of 20 years than a traditional electric fridge, simply because you’ll be hard pressed to find a fridge that will work flawlessly for 20 years for less than a propane fridge. Propane refrigerators use no moving parts, meaning that there is very little to actually wear out. No compressor unit to go bad, no batteries to change, etc. Plus, the electricity might end up costing more in the long run as well.

As you can tell, there are a lot of good reasons to use a propane powered refrigerator. They’re cheaper, last longer, and cool better. We’ve come a long way when it comes to gas cooling, and it will be very apparent after reading through this article. The most common type of old-school refrigerator was the SERVEL brand refrigerator, so all our comparisons will be made with that particular brand.

Efficiency - Old gas refrigerators used A LOT of propane - upwards of ¾ a gallon per day, whereas modern refrigerators use around a ¼ to ⅓ a gallon a day. This was due to the design of the absorption system not being as thermally efficient as it could be. Modern day systems are engineered to be incredibly efficient and can run for a long time while using minimal fuel. This change in fuel efficiency happened right around 1970, though improvements continue to happen over time.

Venting - The older SERVELs would have very large burners that were very inefficient with the way they burned their fuel. This would lead both to higher fuel usage and dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) buildup. Some of the worst offenders (pre 1950s) were measured to emit up to 1500 parts per million (PPM) of CO gas in very short amounts of time. In a 10 to 20-foot room, 300-400 PPM is considered dangerous and will begin to cause detrimental health effects. New fridges, however, are significantly more clean-burning due to their decreased fuel usage and increased airflow. Post 1980’s fridges, on average, will emit around 20-30 PPM, which is well below the recommended amount from appliances in a residential area. At this rate, no one should ever need to worry about CO poisoning with a modern-day propane refrigerator.

Legality - The inconvenience of having to vent an old SERVEL brand fridge could very well be enough of a reason alone to want to purchase a new EZ FREEZE refrigeration. And, if you live in Canada, it might not be a good idea to purchase a SERVEL that is pre- 1980, as it is completely illegal. In the United States, there is often a $100 disposal cost involved with these old machines too. A little about maintaining your gas fridge or gas freezer – Information from Gas-Fridge

A gas fridge or freezer is a wonderful thing! For those people in remote locations without power, and areas prone to extended or unpredictable power outages, a gas fridge or freezer can be a life saver. Keeping food fresh or frozen makes life in remote locations easier and, during the winter months, the only real possible solution. Gas-Fridge brings you information on maintaining your gas fridge and freezer.

Because there are no moving parts in these gas refrigerators and gas freezers, there's not much maintenance needed. One very important thing you can do to keep the unit working to its maximum efficiency is to clean the flue periodically. The flue will soot up due to impurities in the gas. The dirtier the gas, the more soot will develop.

Getting started:

Cleaning the flue is simple. Turn the unit off and let the flue cool for a while. Place something over the burner orifice to protect it from the falling soot. Place a rag or piece of tin foil under the unit to catch any falling soot. Remove the baffles from the flue (if any). Be careful!! They may be hot. Use the Flue Brush and gently scrub the full length of the flue. Rotate the brush a few times to get all the soot possible.

One other common occurrence is debris in the burner air intake. If the gas fridge or gas freezer has been sitting for a while, spiders like the smell of propane and will make webs in the burner area and the unit will not light or burn with a dirty foul flame. Dirt, dust, pet hair, insects, lint, or anything migrating behind the gas fridge will increase the chances of the burning running foul.

Next step:

While in use, if the flame tip is yellow or orange, then chances are there is debris in the burner tube and air intake. It is very easy to remove. Turn the unit off. Using a piece of 1/4" flexible rubber hose, just aim it at the Air Intake of the Burner and blow through the other end to clean out the debris. Using compressed air or "air in a can" works well also. Be sure the unit is off and cooled before using "air in a can" since it can be highly flammable. Re-light the unit and visually check the flame. It should be a crisp blue flame with a white or yellow tip.

Continued maintenance:

Your refrigerator will give you years of trouble-free service if you do the following simple maintenance we mention above. To prevent debris from getting into the burner tube and creating most issues, it's a good idea to vacuum under and around your gas refrigerator or gas freezer often.
Checks every three to six months will help. Refer to the operator’s guide provided with your refrigerator for more details.

Adjusting the Temperature of Propane Gas Refrigerators - Gas Fridge

Most propane gas refrigerators end up in remote locations. Off-grid owners have more of a vested interest in keeping the refrigerator operating efficiently. Propane is usually trucked to the location or hand carried. Most rural off grid homes, cabins, and cottages don’t have automatic climate control. The off grid refrigerator is subject to a wider range of ambient temperatures during the day and during the seasonal changes. Gas Fridge has a few sets of instructions for adjusting the thermometer to help you economize your power usage.

Gas refrigerators are all manually temperature controlled (no digital thermostats or electronics).

Using the Fridge for the weekend only:
•    Allow 12 hours of chill down time for your gas fridge, if empty at 70°-80° room temperature.
•    Keep the door closed as much as possible – it’s tempting to look inside; at least know what you need before opening the door. Temperatures inside the fridge won’t fluctuate as often and your fridge will run more efficiently.
•    Don’t load the fridge with any food or liquids that are not already cold or frozen.
•    Set the temperature setting to maximum. If possible, set the thermostat to maximum and replenish the ice trays or drinks at night right before bedtime.
•    Now that the fridge is chilled down, load the groceries in smaller amounts at timed intervals (10 lb / 2 hours). Recovery times increase by three times, if all loaded items are not cold or frozen.
•    If all your items are cold or frozen, it’s okay to load all of them at once.
•    Liquid is more dense and takes longer to chill. 4 individual quarts of liquid chill faster than a one gallon container with liquid.
•    If you’re having extra guests or a party at the cabin, rely on an ice chest for cold drinks – this reduces the traffic to the fridge, keeps the door closed, and helps to keep the perishable items cold.

Using the fridge full-time:

•    Allow 12 hours of chill down time for your gas fridge, if empty at 70°-80° room temperature.
•    Keep the door closed as much as possible – it’s tempting to look inside; at least know what you need before opening the door. Temperatures inside the fridge won’t fluctuate and your fridge will run more efficiently.
•    Load the groceries in smaller amounts at timed intervals (10 lb / 2 hours).
•    Keep track of the refrigerators interior temperatures – the setting will affect the refrigerator compartment temperatures. (There is no setting for the freezer.)
•    The thermostat for the home type refrigerators is located at the bottom of the cabinet on the outside front, near or behind the kick plate.
•    If possible install a remote digital thermometer. This allows you to monitor inside temperatures without opening the door and it also has an alarm in case the gas supply suddenly stops working.

Stabilizing the temperature:

•    Start at the maximum setting.
•    Take a true reading first thing in the morning before the door is opened.
•    When the reading reaches 32°, slightly move the dial toward the minimum setting, 1/12 of a turn.
•    Ideally the temperature should be 34° - 38°.

Seasonal Changes and humidity levels will have an affect on demand and will produce more frost on the cooling fins. Food mass or a full fridge will keep the temperature more stable compared to an empty fridge with more air mass. Cold air from a fairly empty fridge will simply fall to the floor. Did You Know that Gas Fridge Services and Repairs RV Refrigerators?

A non-functioning refrigerator in a recreational vehicle can be problematic. When the refrigerator is down, the RV becomes useless by limiting the ability to travel away from civilization and be self reliant. There are many engine mechanics that can get you and your RV back on the road. There aren’t many RV Refrigerator Repairers that can properly repair your fridge and get you back to your way of life. Gas-Fridge can assist you with maintenance or repairs.
   
Until now, we haven’t advertised this service. We repair refrigerators for local folks as well as vacationers from out of town.  Many times the repair can be as simple as a fouled burner or as complicated as a leaking absorption cooling unit.

Most RV Refrigerators will fail early from the wear life of the unit and the wear life of the vehicle. The fridge might look brand new but will only need service or a repair. RVs travel a lot, leaving the fridge exposed to the elements, and it the will typically need more service than one that is static and in a home. The debris, dirt, road grime, and weather is hard on the burner and controls that are exposed to these elements.

An RV will go through periodic use, and since the fridge is turned on for short periods of time and then turned off for longer periods of time. Condensation develops as a result of this activity and will eventually corrode the cooling bars and cause a leak within the sealed absorption system. Boilers may crack from the constant heating and cooling of these metals. This is becoming more common with newer models. The electronic ignition will turn the flame on and off to control the internal temperatures of the refrigerator and freezer. Older models relied on a continuous flame that switched from high to low.

This would keep the boiler metals from flexing to a state where a crack would develop. We replace these absorption cooling units with either re-manufactured rebuilt cooling units or newly redesigned high performance cooling units.

For the larger model refrigerators, we can replace the cooling unit without removing the refrigerator from inside of the RV coach. Sometimes we replace the cooling when the customer removes a smaller refrigerator and drops it off. We also have the ability to ship the cooling unit directly to you so that you can do the replacement yourself. We have many options to accommodate you and your schedule.

Our maintenance service consists of cleaning the flue, burner, and orifice and is included in any repair or service we perform. This is an important service that most RV owners never perform and is the cause of the majority of the issues we find. We also replace control boards (if available), Igniters, and heat rods for those units that have failed electronics.

“I found bad advice on the internet about Gas Refrigerators!” Gas-Fridge is here to help.

Occasionally we discover an article from the internet such as this one posted by The Tiny House that may need clarification.  Gas Fridge would like to point out some misinformation here.

The author should seek advice from a qualified professional, instead of someone who is not an authority. The fridge is not designed for the purpose stated in the article. It should be able to function reasonably well in its current configuration.

Look for user error or installer error. Start by testing the gas pressure. This unit switches from high to low flame to control the rate of ammonia solution circulating through the system. When gas pressure is set too high, then the low flame circuit is not low enough. This causes too much solution circulation and creates freezing.

Propane refrigerators are sensitive to gas pressure. Use a secondary regulator. Be sure to have the correct pressure from the regulator. Most other gas appliances are not that sensitive to pressure. Set the pressure spot to 11 inches of water column for your propane refrigerator, or EZ Freeze brand.

If that tests okay, then the thermostat may have been calibrated too high and the unit is switching back to high flame too early and switching back too late. EZ Freeze uses this same thermostat within both the gas refrigerator units and gas freezer units. The difference is how they calibrate them for the temperature range. Calibration for this unit may have been set leaning to a colder setting from the factory. 

This unit does not have the best thermo-insulation design between the fridge and freezer so leakage between the two spaces is a factor. This fridge was never intended for full time living in a home. It was made for an RV. RV’s are not built for efficiency; they are built for recreation or surviving away from home.

Propane Refrigerator Transporting and Storage - Gas Fridge

Congratulations! Either you bought a new home, or you just purchased a brand new propane refrigerator. Your baby, whether it's brand new, or you're re-locating, transporting the unit is not as complicated as you might believe. The gas refrigerator or gas freezer is not the same as your ordinary GE (General Electric). Before you strap your beloved fridge to the dolly, Gas-Fridge would like to go over a few facts. Moving a gas – or propane refrigerator is not as complicated as you may think. Here are few simple rules to follow.

The gas refrigerator or gas freezer is not built with the same components as an electric refrigerator. It's okay to tip, or lay the fridge on one side. Keeping it upright, no matter what, does not apply to the gas fridge. Transporting your propane refrigerator on its side has no long term affects to the operation, performance, or lifespan.  Laying the gas fridge on the back or even the front door is not out of the question but if you have a choice, however, we suggest the side to the left. Look to the left of the refrigerator, and lay it with the door's opening toward the floor.

Here's why: 1) With some brands, the solution within the sealed absorption system may get trapped in the wrong location. This limits or blocks the circulation of fluids during operation. A burping procedure must be used to free the “Lock” or “Blockage”. It's a simple process: Burping Your Propane Refrigerator. There are some exceptions, and for some brands, laying the left side down keeps the fluid where it needs to be. When standing the fridge back upright again, a “Lock” or Blockage” is less likely. The EZ Freeze brand is not susceptible to this type of “Lock” or “Blockage”.  2) The side of the fridge is a flat surface and will hold up better during transportation and is less prone to damage compared to the front or back. We suggest extra padding to avoid damage to the thin sheet metal cabinet.

Prolong the life of your gas refrigerator by following these simple steps:

It's okay to store a gas refrigerator while not in use with some basic care. Whether it's long term, or short term storage, a gas fridge stored while not in use will not have a short or long term affect. 1) Remove any moisture from the interior to prevent mold buildup. 2) Put some charcoal inside the refrigerator, or freezer to help absorb moisture, and avoid odor. An old newspaper will work, too. Leaving the door open may work, but for safety reasons is not recommended. Small children or animals may find their way inside.

Storing your propane fridge in freezing climates will not harm the unit. Remember to remove canned drinks. They will explode and will damage the interior – even with the door closed.

Keep insects away! Spray an insect repellent around the burner box to deter insects such as spiders from nesting in the burner. An insect nest in the burner will cause performance issues and possibly a danger upon startup.

When it's time to put your gas fridge back to use, check your flame condition immediately after startup. The flame should be a bright blue at the base and have a clear tip with no yellow or white color. This clear tip is usually at the very top of the flame located up inside the flue exhaust. Use a mirror at the floor facing upwards to inspect it. If a yellow or white tip is present, maintenance is required.
